Abstract

1457999 Bituminous compositions RUBEROID Ltd 31 Oct 1973 [1 Nov 1972] 50339/72 Headings C3N and C3P [Also in Divisions B2 and D1] A composition comprises a mixture of (a) pitch and/or bitumen, (b) a polymer, (c) a halogen donor which is defined as a polyhalogenated pentacyclodecane, a polyhalogenated pentacyclodecane derivative, an alkylbenzene containing two or more chlorine and/or bromine atoms as nuclear substituents or mixtures thereof, and (d) a finely divided material which comprises one or more of (i) aluminoferrosilicates or aluminosilicates, e.g. fuel ash or fly ash, (ii) ferric oxide and (iii) carbon black, the halogen donor imparting a flame retardant property to the composition. Preferred halogen donors are C 10 Cl 12 , C 10 Cl 10 O, C 10 Cl 4 F 8 , C 10 H 2 O 3 SCl 12 , and pentabromo-toluene. Numerous polymers are specified those especially preferred being polyethylene, polypropylene, a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate, and natural or synthetic rubber. The composition may also contain additives such as plasticizers, anti-oxidants, stabilizers and fillers, e.g. cotton linters, asbestos, nylon fibres, polypropylene fibres and polyethylene terephthalate fibres, slate dust, or ground limestone. Fibrous web or felts may also be incorporated. Examples, 1, 2 and 3 disclose compositions comprising coal tar pitch, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate, cadmium stearate, a polyhalogenated pentacyclodecane, pulverized fuel ash or carbon black; Example 4 a composition comprising bitumen, ethylenevinyl acetate copolymer, phenolic anti-oxidant, a polyhalogenated pentacyclodecane, and pulverized fuel ash; Example 5 a composition comprising bitumen, polyethylene wax, pentabromotoluene and fuel ash; and Example 6 a composition comprising coal tar pitch, rubber, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, a polyhalogenated pentacyclodecane, fuel ash, cotton flock, and cadmium stearate.
