1457689 Apparatus for baiting hooks MUSTAD INDUSTRIER A/S 26 Nov 1974 [7 Jan 1974] 51049/74 Heading A1A An apparatus for baiting hooks 2 attached to a line 4 by means of a snood 3 comprises a hook guide 1, retaining flap 5 mounted at 6 on frame 7 to pivot in the advance direction of hook 2 against the action of tension spring 8, a finger 13 mounted transversely of the hook guide, and arm 9 mounted at 10 to be raised against the action of spring 11 for the introduction of a bait piece 12. The bait piece is retained by a stepped portion 1' of the upper side of the hook guide 1. As the hook 2 is drawn through the apparatus the inner surface of its curved part engages finger 13 which projects inwardly above path 16 of the hooks 2 in hook guide 1, and pivots against the action of spring 15 thereby slowing the movement of the hook and tightening, both snood 3 and line 4 so that the hook 2 enters the bait piece 12 at reduced speed. The finger 13 with the inner surface of the hook 2 forms a cross-shaped bearing surface for the bait piece 12. As the hook 2 enters the bait piece it rotates to the position indicated by broken lines in Fig. 1 due to the positioning of the lower edge of the flap 5 with respect to that of the cross shaped bearing surface, forcing the hook through the back portion of the bait piece. Return movement of finger 13 serves to actuate means (not shown) for feeding a fresh bait piece to the bait holder with displacement of any bait piece too soft to be conveyed to the hook.
