Abstract

1456841 Ethylene polymerization IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 29 March 1974 [29 March 1973] 15158/73 Heading C3P Ethylene is polymerized by introducing into a polymerization reactor a mixture of 0-80% (by wt.) of a volatile diluent, 5-80% of ethylene and 0-95% of a 1-olefin comonomer and reacting with an organo-compound of a transition metal at 100-350‹ C. and a pressure which is (a) 300-1000 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> when a diluent is present or (b) 300-600 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> when no diluent is present. A copolymer of ethylene and 6-12% by wt. of hexene-1 is claimed per se. The preferred catalysts are zirconium or titanium tetrabenzyl supported on alumina formed in the presence of a block copolymer dispersant. The ethylene/hexene copolymer is also prepared in examples using Ziegler catalyst combinations.
