1456479 Preparation of 5-methyl-2-nitrophenol SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 13 June 1975 25469/75 Heading C2C A process for the preparation of 5 methyl-2- nitrophenol comprises the steps of (1) sulphonating di-m-cresyl carbonate with a sulphonating agent, (2) nitrating the resulting sulphonated di-m-cresyl carbonate with a nitrating agent, (3) hydrolysing the resulting compound to crude nitro-m-cresols, and (4) steam distilling said nitro-m-cresol to obtain as distillate 5-methyl- 2-nitrophenol.
