Abstract

1456138 Locks D M SABSAY 16 April 1974 16649/74 Heading E2A The memory of an electronic lock is automatically reset to a new code number when a key having both the new code and the superseded one is inserted. Each time a key is used, two numbers are entered, a new key number and an "authorisation" number which is the superseded number. If the key number is found to match the combination previously stored in the memory, the lock is opened in the normay way. But if they do not match, a comparison is made between the entered authorisation number and the previously stored combination, and if these numbers correspond, the lock memory is reset to the entered key number. Then the first comparison step is repeated, and the lock is opened. The old code number will now not release the lock. As shown, a key 100 of plastics material has binary numbers encoded thereon at 107 and 108 by means of magnetic spots, coloured ink or punched holes 101. The key also has coded areas 104, 105 whereby it may be inserted either-side-up into a key reader 114 provided on a door lock 116. If the key number matches the previously stored combination number, memory and decoding circuits 115 effect unlocking of the lock. In making a new key, a new key number is entered via an input-output device 120 and a previously assigned key number, retrieved by a computer 121, is transmitted to the key producer 124 which encodes the previous key number as the present authorisation number. A randomizer 126, i.e. a high-rate free-running counter, presents to the computer a randomly selected number which is encoded on the key as the new key number. The key may be encoded to give access to a predetermined number of locks.
