Abstract

1456014 Chain saws TEXTRON Inc 25 June 1975 [25 June 1974] 26914/75 Heading B5L A chain saw comprises a rotatable drum 4 a chain driving sprocket 3 fixed to the drum and a chain brake for stopping the cutting chain quickly in the event of "kickback", the brake comprising a flexible brake band 5 engageable with the drum, means 6 anchoring one end 5d of the brake band, the brake band extending around the drum from the anchoring means in the direction of rotation of the drum, operating means 8 acting on the other end 5c, 10 of the brake band and movable between a brake releasing condition as shown in Fig. 1 and a brake applying condition as shown in Fig. 3, inertial means 12, 15 operatively associated with and controlling the operating means and responsive to sudden movement of the chain saw of predetermined acceleration, direction and duration to cause movement of the operating means from brake releasing condition to brake applying condition and spring means 18 acting between the inertial means 12 and the operating means 8: (a) to retain the inertial means and operating means in brake releasing condition, (b) to restore the inertial means and operating means to brake releasing condition in the event of movement of the chain saw less than said predetermined sudden movement and (c) to retain the inertial means and operating means in brake-applying condition when moved thereto, means 15 being provided for manually resetting the brake, an initial portion of the resetting movement being against the bias of the spring 18 and the final portion assisted thereby. The inertial means comprises a tubular hand guard 15 mounted on a pivotal member 12 the eccentricity of the weight of the guard 15 relative to the pivot 14 providing for relative pivotal movement in the event of a "kickback" to actuate the brake applying means. Furthermore the guard 15 is so disposed relative to the handle H (shown dotted) of the saw that in the event of "kickback" the guard 15 may be contacted by the wrist of the chain operator to assist in causing pivotal movement of the guard relative to the saw.
