Abstract

1456095 Cartridge feed for automatic firearms INDUSTRIE-WERKE KARLSRUHE AUGSBURG AG 14 Jan 1974 [27 Jan 1973] 01767/74 Heading F3C In an automatic firearm with a reciprocatory breech controlled by discharge gas pressure, a cartridge feed device 2 has two longitudinally parallel feed sections, each for receiving a cartridge belt 15 and is selectively transversely displaceable for cartridge feed from one of the belts such that one section is disengaged from a forward feed drive mechanism 8 before the other section is engaged, the drive mechanism having a gas discharge responsive piston to actuate the respective feed section for cartridge feed upon breech recoil. Recoil gas acts on a lateral piston having a rack formation to rotate directly one pinion 8f and a second pinion 8c via the first pinion, the pinion being connectible to parallel longitudinal shafts 2b dependent on lateral positioning of the feed device 2, which contains spiders 4 accepting the respective belts 15 of different ammunition. When one form of ammunition is to be used, the shaft 2b of the corresponding spider 4 has a T-end which engages a corresponding part of the pinion 8e, 8f for spider rotation; as can be seen in Fig. 5, the ammunition acceptance position is at an angle to the vertical. A further clip of ammunition 17 of different type may be inserted for feeding. Lateral feed device movement is facilitated by a lateral bar 2a of the device 2 slidable in a sleeve fixed to the device 8. Thus three types of ammunition, e.g. armour piercing, explosive, tracer, and target marking ammunition can be fired at will.
