Abstract

1456068 Cooling electrical machines GANZ VILLAMOSSAGI MUVEK 16 Aug 1974 [22 Aug 1973] 36213/74 Heading H2A In an electrical machine having conductors 8, 9 arranged in coil slots 2 in a cylindrical rotor 1, an extension region 3 without conductors is formed below each of the coil slots, and cooling channels 14, 15 lying in planes having their normals perpendicular to the rotor axis are formed in or between the conductors, adjacent channels being connected to each other, and the channel nearest to the rotor axis being connected to the region 3 and the channel farthest from the axis being connected to axially displaced inlet and outlet ports 12, 13 leading to the air gap surface of the rotor. In the arrangement shown, the channels 14, 15 are disposed on tangential axes perpendicular to the rotor axis, and an ambient gas such as hydrogen which enters the rotor through ports 12 circulates via radial chambers 10, 11 formed in insulating slot liners 7. The ambient gas is also able to enter the rotor at inlet ports (not illustrated) at the ends of the rotor, this gas flowing into the extension regions 3 and then entering the cooling channels via a radial channel 16 passing at least through an insulator 6. In the arrangement of Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), the corresponding cooling channels (14, 15) lie on axes parallel to the rotor axis and the ambient gas circulates via further channels (16, 19) disposed radially in the rotor.
