1455738 Nitriles F HOFFMANN-LA ROCHE & CO AG 26 July 1974 [27 July 1973] 04560/76 Divided out of 1455736 Heading C2C Compounds of the general formula (R<SP>1,2</SP> = alkyl, alkenyl; Y = leaving group; A<SP>2</SP> = CF 3 , CN, alkoxycarbonyl, CR<SP>8</SP>R<SP>9</SP>R<SP>13</SP>; R<SP>8,9</SP> = H, alkyl; R<SP>13</SP> = OH, alkoxy, NR<SP>3</SP>R<SP>4</SP>; R<SP>3,4</SP> = H, alkyl, alkanoyl) are prepared by standard methods, e.g. reacting the corresponding compound containing a formyl or 1-hydroxy- 2-methylsulphonylethyl group para to A<SP>2</SP> with YCH 2 CH 2 CN, optionally followed by replacement of the leaving group by another. The preparation of methyl 4-formyl and chloroformyl - 2,6 - dimethoxybenzoate, 1 - ethyl and diethyl 2,6 - diethoxyterephthalate, ethyl 4- formyl and chloroformyl - 2,6 - diethoxybenzoate, methyl 4-cyano, aminomethyl and acetamidomethyl - 3,5 - dimethoxybenzoate, N - (2,6 - dimethoxy - 4 - methylsulphonylacetylbenzyl)acetamide, N - [2,6 - dimethoxy - 4 - (1 - hydroxy - 2- methylsulphonylethyl)benzyl] - acetamide and 4- (1 - hydroxyethyl), (1 - hydroxy - 1 - methylethyl), (1 - hydroxy - 1 - ethylpropyl) and (1 - hydroxypropyl)-3,5-dimethoxybenzaldehyde is described.
