Abstract

1455569 Sorting bottles before passing them to filling apparatus UNIGATE Ltd 29 Jan 1974 [30 Jan 1973] 4631/73 Heading G1A Bottles passing along on a conveyer 1 are captured by a starwheel 4 and brought via a scanning system, consisting of a light source and one or more photo-cells, that provides a reject signal if the bottle is unsuitable (because of size or the presence of a foreign body). The reject signal actuates mechanical means to retain the bottle in the starwheel 4 and prevent if from being captured by a further starwheel 5 in the processing chain leading to the filling apparatus. The means preventing the rejected bottle from passing to the next starwheel 5 may comprise cam actuated clamping devices 18 whose arms 26 are caused to grip its corresponding bottle. This happens whenever a reject signal activates a member 24 pushing its corresponding cam follower 20 from one side of the cam to the other. The clamping device 18 is returned to its original in-operative device by a discontinuity in the cam surface as shown at 30. The deflector is actuated by a reject signal to prevent the rejected bottle being captured by the next starwheel.
