1454874 Laminates JOHNS-MANVILLE CORP 10 July 1974 [16 July 1973 (2)] 30477/74 Heading B5N A flexible laminate 8 for use as a thermal insulation jacket comprises a less than about 0À01 mil thick coating of heat reflective metal 2 on the internal face of a synthetic resin vapour barrier film 1, the metallized face of the vapour barrier film being bonded to a layer of waterproof fibrous material 4 reinforced with a scrim cloth 5 and an exterior layer in the form of a continuous 0À5-4 mils thick film of weatherresistant polymeric resin 7 of halocarbon or acrylic polymer film being bonded to the internal face of the water-proof fibrous material. Film 1 may be of polyethylene terephthalate, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl fluoride or copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride, and the metallized face 2, which may be applied by vapour deposition, may be of aluminium, chromium, copper, nickel, silver, gold or an alloy thereof. Fibrous layer 4 may be a glass fibre, ceramic fibre, polyester fibre or nylon net or asbestos paper, the scrim cloth 5 of glass fibres, nylon or polyethylene terephthalate threads, and the film 7 of polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl fluoride, polymethyl methacrylate or chlorotrifluoroethylene or tetrafluoroethylene polymers. Asbestos paper layer 4 may contain a binder, e.g. a latex of rubber or polyvinyl chloride. The layers may be bonded together using adhesives 3 and 6 which may comprise epoxy resins, vinyl addition polymers, polyalkyl acrylates and synthetic rubbers. Strips of inorganic fibrous mat thermal insulation material, e.g. glass fibres, mineral wool or ceramic fibres, or of flexible polyurethanes foam may be bonded to film 1 by means of an adhesive comprising an epoxy resin, nitrile rubber modified with phenolformaldehyde resin or hot melt adhesives. Two layers of the strips may be provided with an aluminium foil interposed between the layers.
