Abstract

1454766 Automatic control GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 4 Dec 1973 [4 Dec 1972] 56145/73 Heading G3N A control system for a plurality of prime movers is provided gating means whereby a servo means of each prime mover is controlled in dependence on a common and an individual load setting. As shown, steam turbines 1, 2, driving electrical generators 3, 4 are supplied with steam from a boiler 5 through valves 6, 7 controlled by similar arrangements. For turbine 1, the valve 7 is positioned by an electro-hydraulic servo-mechanism 8 in response to a load command 9 from a gate 36 which selects the lowest valve from potentiometers 28, 32 set respectively by a stepping motor 17, responsive to turbine 1 logic 14, and a stepping motor 19, common to potentiometer 32 of turbine 1 and a potentiometer 33 of turbine 2, responsive to master logic 16. The turbine and master logics, which may be influenced by constraints determined by stresses in a turbine or unbalance, are enabled or disabled through switching circuits by a mode selector panel 13 receiving a desired load setting 12 and load set runback signals from circuit 20, 21. The circuits may adjust the rate of power reduction in the event of component failure in the steam generating loop or, in response to signals 22, 23, due to conditions in the electrical network supplied by generators 3, 4 or overspeed sensed by power load unbalance relays 24, 25. Electrical independence between load setting channels for each turbine is maintained by tachogenerators 26, 27 giving a separate speed signal and supplying power to the panel 13. The links between motors 17, 19, 18 and potentiometers 28, 32, 33, 30 comprises racks and pinions and the load set circuits are disclosed as employing operational amplifiers although the use of digital techniques is envisaged.
