Abstract

1454693 Universal joints SKF INDUSTRIAL TRADING & DEVELOPMENT CO BV 5 April 1974 [6 April 1973] 15135/74 Heading F2U In a universal joint in which part-spherical rollers 2, one on each of three radially extending arms 4 of a shaft, run in rectilinear tracks, 14, 15, of a joint sleeve 3 on movement longitudinally of shaft 1 relative to sleeve 3, the part-spherical rollers 2 are of sheet metal 6 and have axially inward extending parts 9 to connect them to sleeves 5 rotatably mounted on arms 4. The radius of curvature of the surface 8 of a roller 2 can be less than that of surface 14 or 15, so that on deformation under load of the roller 2 it assumes the shape of surface 14 or 15, and the roller 2 is slightly larger than the distance between surfaces 14 and 15 to give a slight preload between roller 2 and the surfaces 14, 15. The roller may be filled with a plastics material 12 injected at 11. The sleeves 5 may be mounted on needle bearings (Fig. 4, not shown) rather than the plain bearings illustrated.
