Abstract
1454538 Systems using A/D converters; radio direction finding LICENTIA PATENT VERWALTUNGS GmbH 12 Oct 1973 [13 Oct 1972] 47883/73 Headings H3H and H4D In an arrangement for digitizing the directionfinding voltages X, Y (e.g. from a crossed Adcock antenna system) and the sense determination channel voltage Z (from a non-directional antenna) of a multi-channel direction-finder, sample and hold circuits 3, 4 are provided for the X, Y channels and means 2 are provided in the Z channel for determining the time period for sampling so that the digitized voltages of the X, Y channels correctly contain the amplitude A and azimuth α of the incident wave. The channel voltages are (in general, A#A<SP>1</SP>) and X, Y are sampled by pulses derived at the zeroes of Z (i.e. #t=n#). The azimuth α is then obtained as α=tan<SP>-1</SP> (y 1 /x 1 ) from the samples x 1 =A cos α, y 1 = A sin α. Similar circuits may be used with a phase shifter 23 to derive Z. Means are provided to determine the right quadrant for α, and α may be read from a ROM connected to the converters, possibly via quotient-forming or normalizing circuits, Figs. 8, 9 (not shown). In addition, the angle of the elevation # of an incident wave may be determined using the apparatus of Fig. 12. The antenna voltages are, in this more general case from which, using sin # # # and d=2a, Signals x 1 , y 1 are derived as above; these are at 31, 32 and cos # is obtained at 33.
