Abstract
1454394 Resistance heater NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 22 Feb 1974 [22 Feb 1973] 8709/73 Heading H5H A heating panel comprises one or more carbon fibre resistance layers 4 embedded in a matrix 2, 3 and provided with terminals, e.g. 5, each terminal 5 being located in the panel near an edge thereof and being in the form of a metal strip 6, 7 engaging a resistance layer 4 and an external terminal plate 8 extending along the edge. The matrix material may be polyester resin, epoxy resin polyimide resin, or cement, preferably high alumina cement. The panel may be reinforced by one or more glass fibre layers in the form of chopped strand mat. The carbon fibre is preferably high tensile strength carbon fibre as disclosed in Specification 1,110,791 (N.R.D.C.). The carbon fibre layer 4 is preferably in the form of carbon fibre paper or chopped carbon fibre strand mat. In one specific example seven layers of chopped strand glass fibre mat, 2, 3 were laid up on each side of one ply of chopped strand carbon mat 4 in a mould containing as matrix material a resin mix comprising epoxy resin, methylnadic anhydride hardener and benzyl dimethylamine catalyst. Connector strips prepared by soldering copper strips 6 to tinned copper strips 7 were laid up on opposite edges of the carbon fibre layer. As shown two such connector strips sandwich one edge of the carbon fibre layer 4. The panel was pressed to the desired thickness in the heated mould and the end faces were ground clean and square to enable copper terminal plates 8 to be soft soldered to each end panel. In another example the panel matrix contained four plies of glass fibre mat, one carbon mat, seven of glass fibre, one of carbon and four of glass fibre. At one edge the carbon fibre mats were connected by a terminal plate and at the opposite edge each mat was connected to a separate terminal plate which were insulated from one another by cold curing rubber sealant and mica sheet. The panel may be used as a curing platen for pressure or vacuum moulding Copending Application 8708/73 as drying boards, self heated structural panels, wall or shelf units for warm cupboards, or storage bins for armaments. The panels may be flat or curved.
