Abstract

1454134 Prosthetic joints ROSENTHAL STEMAG TECHNISCHE KERAMIK AG 4 Feb 1974 [3 Feb 1973] 05045/74 Heading A5R [Also in Division B3] An implantable prosthesis, for joining tubular bones, comprises a first ceramic implant screw 3 for screwing into the longitudinal bore 2 of a resectioned bone stump 14, the screw 3 having a self-tapping portion 4, a cylindrical loadbearing portion 5 and a generally cylindrical head portion 6 having an annular groove 8, the head portion 6 being received within a cylindrical bore 10 of the head portion 9 of a second ceramic implant screw inserted into a second resectioned bone stump, a ring 13 being inserted coaxially between the head portions 6, 9 to define their separation, a sleeve 11 having an annular groove 15 then being fitted over the bone stumps and cement filling injected via passages 12 in sleeve 11 and head portion 9 into the space between head portions 6, 9 and the annular groove to lock the implant screws together. A plastics sealing ring 16 held on a flange on screw 3 prevents the cement filling from contacting the bone stump. A range of different thickness rings 13 may be provided, to vary the total length of the implant.
