Abstract
1454006 Electromagnetic holding devices ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AB 21 March 1974 [22 March 1973] 12527/74 Heading H1P An electromagnet for improving the adhesion of rail vehicles comprises (Figs. 2, 3) a magnetizable yoke 2 energized by winding 3 with converging shanks 4, 5 having pole surfaces 6, 7 in a horizontal plane facing rail 1. The inner vertical pole faces enclose and contact a permanent magnet 8 so poled that the flux of the permanent magnet traverses the energizing coil in opposite sense to that generated by the coil so as to counteract the leakage flux between the faces. Permanent magnet 8 may be of high coercive material, e.g. barium strontium ferrite or cobalt-rare earth metals, and the magnet assembly is supported by two plates 11 of magnetizable material. The tips of the pole surfaces 6, 7 are bevelled to reduce leakage flux.
