Abstract

1453883 Intensive horticulture M N J WOMBWELL 9 April 1975 [9 April 1974 27 Aug 1974] 15570/74 and 37324/74 Heading A1E Apparatus for intensive horticulture comprises a translucent enclosure 2 having ventilation panels 3, 9 each formed of two or more wire mesh screens of successively decreasing mesh aperture size from the exterior to the interior of the enclosure, so as to act as draught and insect excluders, as well as reducing aerodynamic uplift of the enclosure. Perforated black plastics bags or pots 7, containing a culture medium, are inserted into a water-bearing material, such as soil, sand &c, which is covered by a black plastics sheet 5 to restrict evaporation from the material into the enclosure's atmosphere. Irrigation is by means of perforated tubes 10 passing through the water-bearing material. Thus, roots are watered, whilst foliage is not exposed to excessive moisture due to layer 5 and the ventilation, and hence the problem of rotting is reduced. The water-bearing material may be placed in a plastics tank to conserve its moisture. For seedling growth, a high moisture content is achieved near the culture medium's surface by placing a circular black plastics sheet, having a central aperture for plant growth therethrough, on the medium's surface in each bag or pot 7, this sheet being removed after sufficient plant growth. The irrigation system may alternatively supply fertiliser, or sterilising liquid or steam, instead of water.
