Abstract
1453030 Heating rope PYROTENAX Ltd and BALFOUR BEATTY Ltd 19 Oct 1973 [20 Oct 1972] 48459/72 Heading H5H [Also in Division D1] A stay rope is made by applying a plurality of metallic wires around a core comprising a heating element insulated from a surrounding metallic sheath by compacted mineral insulation. In Fig. 1 a layer of steel wires 1 is wound helically around a sheathed mineral insulated conductor 2. The conductor 2 is of copper alloy, the sheath 3 is of copper or copper alloy, and the insulation 4 is compacted magnesium oxide powder. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the wires 1 are replaced by stranded ropes each comprising steel wires (7) helically wound around a central wire (8). In Fig. 5 there are a plurality of cores 12, as defined above, around each of which is a layer of steel wires 11. The invention is stated to be suitable for use with a mast or other upstanding structure in conditions where ice may form, an electric current being passed through the conductor or conductors to prevent icing on the rope.
