Abstract
1453014 Reciprocating pumps P MESHBERG 6 March 1974 [8 March 1973] 10040/74 Heading F1A A hand-actuated container-mounted dispensing pump comprises a plunger stem assembly 22, 24 reciprocable in a pumping chamber 14 and inlet chamber 16 and biased upwardly by a spring into the position shown, in which an outlet passage opening 48 is closed by a piston 30, and an inlet valve 28 formed on the plunger stem is open to admit liquid from the container into pumping chamber 14 via dip tube 20 and chamber 16, a container vent passage 54, 10 being closed by plunger stem flange 40 abutting sealing disc 50. On downward movement of the plunger stem, the vent passage is opened, and outlet passage opening 48 also is opened due to the plunger stem sliding through piston 30. When plunger stem flange 40 abuts piston 30, the discharge stroke begins, inlet valve 28 having been closed during the initial plunger stem movement. At the end of the discharge stroke, the plunger stem is released and moves upwardly relative to piston 30 to close outlet opening 48, the plunger and piston assembly then moving upwardly to draw liquid into chamber 14 on opening of inlet valve 28. Vent passage 54 may be formed by knurled portions on pump housing portion 6, or by a cut-away (56), Fig. 6 (not shown), in the housing, either the seal 50 being deflected by the plunger stem to open the passage, as shown, or the flange 40 moving away from a clearance through the seal, (Fig. 6). The piston may be an integral plastics moulding, as shown, or may comprise a resilient disc (64, Fig. 6) with flange members (66, 68) attached above and below. In Fig. 7 (not shown) the piston has an annular head (60) on its lower flange for sealingly engaging the cylinder wall, the inlet valve is constituted by a tapered portion (25) of the plunger stem, and the pump housing is supported in the container cap by an adaptor member (80), the vent passage being defined by knurls formed on the engaging surfaces of the housing or adaptor. The container cap is secured to the adaptor on the housing by crimping. In Fig. 17 (not shown), an actuator button (102) on the plunger stem has a spring-loaded outer sleeve which is depressed by the user to initially compress the spring (112), detents (120, 122, 124) preventing downward movement of the button until released by the sleeve, whereupon the spring then effects the discharge stroke of the button, an orifice (109) in the sleeve aligning with the button spray orifice (104) during actuation.
