Abstract

1452762 Uses of luminescence W S STONE 20 Sept 1973 [24 Oct 1972] 44071/73 Heading C4S [Also in Division F4] An electric torch comprises a case, a substantial part of one wall of which is translucent or transparent and which provides a phosphorescent chamber 80, a light source in or adjacent the chamber so positioned that a substantial part of the light is radiated externally of the case, battery mounting 10, switch means, and a phosphorescent layer in or adjacent the translucent or transparent part of the wall, whereby part of the light from the source enters chamber 80 and reactivates the phosphor enabling ready location. In Fig. 1 (not shown), the bulb has a lens tip (41), and plastic seal (46) with a white reflective surface and hole (49) for bulb positioning. The filament may be entirely inside or outside the chamber. In Fig. 2, most of the filament is external but the glass stem conducts a small part interiorly. The phosphor may be ZnS or CdS, inside or outside or in the wall, or exteriorly on sleeve (92) (Fig. 4, not shown). Further structural details are given including switch and battery mounting (see Division F4). A mounting strip with a protective sheet is described (Fig. 7, not shown) and applications specified.
