Abstract
1452177 Separating aromatic hydrocarbons METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG 20 Feb 1974 [20 March 1973] 7790/74 Heading C5E A mixture 1, comprising aromatic and non-aromatic hydrocarbons, is separated in a distillation column 2 to provide an overhead 6 which is passed in the vapour phase into the extractive distillation column 9 in which it is separated, using N-methylpyrrolidone as the selective solvent, into an overhead 17 comprising non-aromatics and a sump product 10 containtaining the solvent. The sump product can be separated into solvent 12 and an aromatic overhead 22 which is separated into individual aromatic compounds by conventional distillation at 23. The process can be used to separate toluene and xylene, benzene and toluene, or benzene, toluene and xylene from mixtures.
