Abstract
1451796 Polyoxyethylene compounds IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 10 June 1974 [2 July 1973] 31405/73 Heading C3P [Also in Divisions C2 and D1-D2] Polyoxyethylene compounds are characterized as containing 20 oxyethylene residues in one or more blocks and at least five azido or optionally substituted diazomethyl groups. Examples of these compounds are those of the general formula, wherein the groups in square brackets are each attached directly to R groups, Rp is the residue of a polyfunctional radical, Z is monofunctional radical terminating a polyoxyethylene chain, X is a direct link or a linking group of valency m+1, Y is an azido or optionally substituted, diazomethyl group, p is an integer of at least 1, q, r, s, t are 0 or an integer, n is a number with an average of at least 7, m is 1 or 2, the sum of t and the product of s and m is at least 5, nq + nr + ns is at least 20, and the molecular weight divided by sm+t is 410-3000. In Example 3 a copolymer of the general formula wherein n is 5-8À3 is prepared by reacting the acrylic ester of polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether, 2-(azidocarbonyloxy)-ethyl acrylate in solution in toluene in the presence of α,α<SP>1</SP>-azodiisobutyronitrile at 80‹ C. Similar copolymers are prepared by reacting, in the presence of α,α<SP>1</SP>- azodiisobutyronitrile: and CH 3 O(CH 2 CH 2 O) 7 COCH=CH 2 in carbon tetrachloride, ethylene dichloride, no solvent, toluene and dodecyl mercaptan (4-8); and CH 3 O(CH 2 CH 2 O) 16 COCH=CH 2 in carbon tetrachloride or ethylene dichloride (9,10); CH 2 = CHCOOCH 2 CH 2 OCON 3 and either or CH 2 = CHCOO(CH 2 CH 2 O) 35 COCH=CH 2 in toluene (11,12); and and CH 3 O(CH 2 CH 2 O) 7 COCH=CH 2 is ethylene dichloride (13). Example 14 describes the preparation of a copolymer by reacting 2- (azidocarbonyloxy)-ethyl acrylate and the acrylic ester of polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether in aqueous solvent in the presence of potassium metabisulphite and potassium persulphate.
