Abstract

1451503 Centrifugal separator; air cleaner MASSEY FERGUSON INDUSTRIES Ltd 10 Dec 1973 [22 Dec 1972] 57106/73 Headings BIT and B2P [Also in Divisions B7 and F1] A two-stage air cleaner comprises a first chamber 60 associated with a fan 114 for passing air to be cleaned through the chamber and for centrifuging the air so as to separate foreign. matter, the chamber having an opening 85 for the discharge of separated foreign matter and a second chamber 66 mounted within the first chamber and having a screen wall 68 and an opening for the discharge of cleaned air, wiper means 112 being rotatably mounted within the second chamber to periodically block the passage of air through a portion of the screen wall to allow foreign matter retained by the screen wall to be carried to the discharge opening 85 by a portion of the air moving along the screen wall. The air cleaner may be mounted in a combine harvester for removing chaff, straw and dirt from the air and forcing it as cleaned cooling air through the radiator for the associated i.c. engine and into the engine compartment. The fan is driven by V belts 128, 130 by a pulley (44), Fig. 1 (not shown) mounted at the end of a shaft (37) driven by the engine (36). The wiper means 112 consists of a strip of resilient material, e.g. rubber belting, attached to a vane or plate 104 clamped to the free end of one of a pair of arms 102 of a wiper 92, the other arm 102 carrying a vane or plate 106. The wiper is rotated by the major portion of the air which after passing through the screen wall 68 is still rotating when it enters the chamber 66. The discharge opening 85 communicates with a toroidal chamber 84 in which air carrying the separated foreign matter moves in a circular path and is discharged therewith through a tangential, funnel-shaped exhaust passage (86), Fig. 4 (not shown).
