Abstract

1451343 Scrap preparation BRITISH STEEL CORP 16 Jan 1974 [16 Jan 1973] 2264/73 Addition to 1381726 Heading C7D In a process for the fragmentation of cooled scrap, the scrap is cooled in a chamber 14 in the secondary circuit 11 of a heat exchanger 13 by direct contact with cooled gaseous nitrogen or air. Further cooling, either in a continuous or batch operation, by a liquified but normally gaseous coolant is carried out in a secondary apparatus 42 which includes sprays 43 which direct liquid nitrogen on to the cooled scrap 44 prior to feeding to the fragmentation unit 25. The vaporized coolant collected below the cooled scrap 44 is fed to a high pressure blower 46 and receiver 48 and returned to the cooling circuit 11 to make up for leakage losses in the chamber 44. A flow control valve 41 in circuit 11, actuated by controller 53 controlled by gas flow transducers 28, 29 and 54. permits bleed off of coolant gas to maintain chamber 14 at substantially atmospheric pressure, and the bled coolant may be used to pre-cool the scrap. The primary circuit 10 of the heat exchanger 13 is fed with liquid methane gas from a liquification plant 12.
