Abstract

1451204 Thermoforming cutlery; knives DRG (PACKAGING) Ltd 12 March 1975 [14 Dec 1973] 58109/73 Headings B5A and B4B [Also in Division A4] Cutlery is formed from a sheet of plastics material by simultaneously thermoforming a foodmanipulating end 9 and an elongate handle 2 reinforced by having a portion thermoformed out of the plane of the sheet along at least part of its length. A flange 3 is formed on the back of a knife at 90 degrees (Figs. 1-3, not shown) or angled at less than 90 degrees and thereafter returning at 90 degrees across the plane of the knife, Figs. 5 and 7, by vacuum forming on a mould and then trimming along cut lines 7 and 8. The blade of the knife is at an angle to the face of the trimming die 14 so that a tapered edge 15 is formed. The flange 3 may be bevelled at each end or may taper towards the blade end. Spoons and forks are formed with upturned or downturned flanges extending partly or all around a flat handle 2 (Figs. 12 and 14). Alternatively a fork handle may be curved or V-shaped in cross-section, or may be formed with a reinforcing channel 17 extending into the tined end portion 9.
