1451283 Joint endoprotheses FRIEDRICHSFELD GmbH STEINZEUG-UND KUNSTSTOFFWERKE 31 Jan 1974 [10 Feb 1973] 04546/74 Heading A5R [Also in Divisions El and E2] A joint endoprothesis comprises an articular part 3 of substantially non-porous Al 2 O 3 -ceramic, which is subjected to sliding friction, and a fixing part 1, for fixing in a bone shaft, made of high strength steel provided with at least one substantially non-porous glass or glass-like coating on those surfaces which come into contact with animal tissue. The term glass or glass-like coating means a layer of glass, vitreous enamel or vitreous ceramic, if necessary attached to the metal by at least one intermediate metallic layer, e.g. galvanically applied. A porous layer of ceramic may be applied to the glass or glass-like coating in order to improve the fixation of part 1 to growing tissue. One embodiment, Figure 1, is a hip joint in which the fixing part 1 is to be seated in a femur up to a collar 2. Fixing part 1, made of very hard steel with a high creep resistance, is provided with a glass or glass-like coating, except on those surfaces facing generally-spherical articular part 3. Part 1 carries a peg 4 with a flat surface, serving to prevent torsion of the part 3. Articular part 3 is fixed to peg 4 with a suitable adhesive after part 1 has been implanted in the femur. The boundary surfaces 5 of parts 3 and 1 are flat, e.g. ground. An Al 2 O 3 -ceramic acetabulum 6 is polished to fit the articular part 3 and carries grooves 7 for obtaining direct fixation in a pelvic bone. In another embodiment, Figures 2 and 3 (not shown), an elbow joint consists of two fixing parts (8, 9) and two articular parts (10, 11). After implantation of the fixing parts (8, 9), pegs (12, 13) are fixed into corresponding recesses in articular parts (10, 11) respectively, with adhesive. Boundary surfaces (14, 15) are flat. and the surfaces of the parts (10, 11) which slide on each other are polished to fit together.
