Abstract

1451001 Contacting two miscible liquids with solids E I'DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 23 Jan 1974 3161/74 Headings B1F and B1Q In an apparatus for contacting two miscible liquids with solids by the sink-float technique a first liquid is introduced at 17, a second miscible liquid is introduced at 19, a mixture comprising the bulk of the second liquid and a minor proportion of the first liquid are drawn off through 20a, and a liquid comprising the bulk of the first liquid and the rest of the second liquid is drawn off at 18, solid, if heavier than the liquids being introduced at 17 and withdrawn at 20a, with the sweep arms 15 as shown, on if lighter than the liquids the solid is introduced at 19 and leaves via 18, in which case the sweep arms 15 are adjacent the underside of perforate plates 11, the sweep arms 15 periodically being rotated to impell the solid through the apertures of plates 11, which apertures are of a size permitting ready transit of the solid and liquids, e.g. 5-200 times the average particle screen size of the solid, e.g. “"-¢" in diameter. Thus in Ex. IV, organic material is removed from a 20% gypsum slurry formed by lime neutralization of a sulphuric acid solution of organic material by contact with water in apparatus similar to that shown; in Ex. V a first solvent is removed from a polymer which it has swollen by forming a swell it, and contacting the slurry in apparatus slurry with a second solvent which does not similar to that shown with another stream of the second solvent; and in Ex. VI a coating on particles is removed by contact with a solvent.
