Abstract
1450835 Metal-vapour lamps PATENTTREUHAND - GES FUR ELEKTRISCHE GLUHLAMPEN mbH 20 March 1974 [6 April 1973] 12422/74 Heading H1D In a high pressure mercury discharge lamp with a metal halide addition, the ratio of the electrode spacing to the maximum inner diameter of the discharge vessel is 0À05 to 1 per kW. input power and the ratio of power input in watts to the volume of the discharge arc in c.c. is between 10 and 100. As shown, a quartz envelope 1 has opposite stems, each supporting an electrode 2, 3 in a molybdenum cup 7 sealed to the stem. Each electrode, which is supported by a disc 9 fitting into the cup, passes through a seal with the cup, and has a heat accumulating groove 8 beyond the seal. The envelope 1 of the dimensions given in the Specification is filled with xenon at 50 torr, together with 150 mg of mercury, 33 mg of dysprosium tri-iodide and 10 mg of thallium iodide. The central core of the arc emits line spectra, but when the dimensions are chosen according to the invention, a continuous spectrum is also emitted from surrounding regions 12 occupying up to 90% of the space within envelope 1. Envelope 1 may be surrounded by a further envelope, the space between them being filled with gas at low pressure and with high dielectric strength.
