Abstract

1450714 Laminates UNION CARBIDE CORP 3 Dec 1973 [4 Dec 1972] 55853/73 Heading B5N [Also in Division A5] A disposable diaper or incontinency pad comprises a hydrophobic top sheet 16 having a plurality of valvular openings 18a and a plurality of depressions 22 therein, and at least one absorbent pad 12 disposed between said top sheet and backing sheet, said openings being substantially parallel straight slits disposed in longitudinal rows and being substantially closable. The depressions may number up to 100 per square inch of absorbent pad area and cover not more than 20% of said area, their cross-sectional configuration being, e.g. circular of diameter between 0À025 and 0À250 inch. Those openings or slits closest to the depressions are open to a greater extent than those further from said depressions. The top sheet is a film of, e.g. ethylene-ethyl acrylate having a thickness between 0À5 and 2À0 mil., as is the thickness of the backing sheet. The pad may be formed of a stack of layers of wadding or tissue. The top and backing sheets are heat-sealed to each other around their periphery. Each slit is inclined to the longitudinal axis of the row in which it is located. The slits are between 0À03 and 0À25 inch in length and number 30 to 150 per square inch. The backing sheet is an olefinic or vinyl film. The absorbent filling may contain insoluble hydrophilic homopolymers or copolymers which form a gel upon absorption of water. Perfume, deodorizer, baby powder, soothing lotion or a germicidal agent may be added to the filling, and tabs, adhesives &c. may be attached to the pad for connection to a wearer. In an alternative embodiment Fig. 6 (not shown), the slits are substantially parallel to the axes of the longitudinal rows they form.
