Abstract
1450493 Controlling light SIEMENS AG 10 May 1974 [18 June 1973] 20706/74 Heading G2F [Also in Divisions C6-7] The surface of a substrate in contact with a liquid crystal phase includes a vapour deposited layer of material with a columnar structure normal to the surface over the whole area of the layer, e.g. magnesium or thorium fluoride, aluminium or thorium oxide, zinc sulphide, whereby the liquid crystal molecules adjacent the layer assume a normal homotropic orientation. The vapour deposition source is preferably spaced from the surface by a distance large compared with any linear dimension of the surface. Limited areas only of the surface may be coated. The induced orientation is useful for example in devices where application of an electric field realigns the molecules, charging the birefringence of the liquid crystal phase, which may be disposed between polarizers for optical intensity modulation.
