Abstract

1450245 Controlling coke cutting MARATHON OIL CO 1 Feb 1974 [12 Feb 1973] 04801/74 Heading F4B [Also in Division G1] In a method of cutting coke 11 from the chamber 12 of a delayed coker, the coke falls on to a surface 15 and a sensing device 19, e.g. measuring noise or vibration, associated with said surface is used to determine the size of the coke being cut. As shown the device 19 is a geophone connected to an amplifier 21 and speaker 20 by which the operator can tell the approximate size of the coke particles 14 and raise or lower the travel rate of the cutting nozzle 13. The signal may alternatively be transmitted to an oscilloscope so that in another arrangement (Fig. 2) the signal from a geophone (1) is transmitted through an amplifier (2) to oscilloscopes (3 and 4) responding to higher and lower amplitude pulses used by an analog computer (5) to control automatically the travel rate of the cutter through mechanism (6).
