Abstract

1450006 Toner particle manufacture WIFO WISSENSCHAFTLICHES FORSCHUNGSINSTITUT AG 14 Feb 1975 [26 Feb 1974] 6437/75 Heading G2H Electrographic toner particles are made by dispersing as liquid droplets a solution of a toner material in a liquid which is immiscible with the toner solvent and does not dissolve the toner material, causing the droplets to solidify as globular particles by removing solvent from the droplets and separating the solidified toner particles from the said liquid. In the examples, hot solutions of resins plus Sudan black in organic solvents are dispersed in hot water with and without added surfactants, in some examples diluted with water, cooled, the organic solvent evaporated and the particles filtered off and dried. The toner particles are mixed with iron carrier particles. Resins exemplified are polyamides and mixtures comprising polyvinylbutyral, polyvinyl acetate, a terpene resin, an esterified Montan wax with and without polydimethylsiloxine. Surface modifying materials, such as finely divided silica, bentonite or talc, may be added to the dispersion after solidification of the toner particles or may be added to the toner particles after redispersion in water. Silicone oils may be added before or after solidification of the particles.
