Abstract
1450045 Compression moulding of preforms GKN GROUP SERVICES Ltd 19 Dec 1973 [20 Sept 1972] 43535/72 Addition to 1292593 Heading B5A The apparatus and method of the Parent Application are modified, respectively to mould a gear ring having both external and internal teeth, and the gear wheel of the parent Specification having external teeth and a central bore from a number of different polymers. The internal and external teeth 30, 32 of the gear ring 25 are respectively formed by grooves 31, 33, of annular cavity 12a defined by stationary mould parts 11 and 12, 12b. An annular thermoplastics preform, preheated in a furnace to a temperature just below its crystalline melting point, is located in the cavity 12a, and a hydraulic ram 17 descends to sealingly engage a plunger 13, comprising outer annular and inner parts, against the upper surfaces of mould parts 11, 12, 12b, to close the ends of the grooves 31, 33. The plunger 13 is mounted to the ram 17 for lost motion, against springs 18, permitting continued movement of the ram 17 so that an annular plunger 14, carried thereby for sliding movement within an annular groove 19 of ram 13, enters the cavity 12a to displace the preheated blank radially outwardly, and into the grooves 31, 33. Upon raising the ram 17, the gear wheel 25 is ejected by pins 34 displaced by a member 37. The plunger 14 is mounted to the ram 17 by four slides 15 passing through the plunger 13. The die parts may have conduits for passage of oil or water, cooling or heating medium. The gear wheel of the parent Application having external teeth and a central bore, may be moulded in a die heated to specified temperatures, from polymers pre-heated to specified temperatures and comprising a homo- or co-polymer of propylene, nylon 6, and ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene. The forging pressure is maintained for a dwell time, during which the pressure is reduced for the polyethylene.
