Abstract

1449128 Valves RUBERY OWEN & CO Ltd 18 Dec 1973 [19 Dec 1972] 58632/72 Heading F2V [Also in Division E2] Means for locating a linearly movable member in one or more positions, especially an axially movable valve spool 1, comprises an axially slidable sleeve 4 carrying balls 9 located in holes 10, the balls being biased radially outwardly by the force of a spring 14 transmitted through coned collars 11, 12 mounted on a central shaft 13. The sleeve is biased to a neutral, unlatched position as shown by a spring 19. However, movement of the sleeve to a position in which the balls are aligned with annular channel 7 or 8 allows the balls to move radially into the channel and thereby latch the sleeve axially. Only one channel may be provided. Alternatively, the channels may be replaced by a ring of angularly-spaced recesses and the sleeve may then be keyed against angular movement, or allowed to rotate to angular positions having complete freedom of axial movement. The force exerted by spring 14 is adjustable by nut 16.
