Abstract

1449088 Composite foams BAYER AG 24 May 1974 [22 Aug 1973] 23315/74 Heading B2E A composite foam consists of a layer of polyethylene foam and adjacent thereto a layer of polyethylene and polypropylene layers. The polyethylene foam may be laminated to a textile layers are bonded together without any bonding agent and the polyethylene foam has been cross-linked by radiation or with peroxide. The composite foam may be in the form of a series of polyethylene and polypropylene layers. The polyethylene foam may be laminated to a textile cover or interlayer. The polyurethane may be rigid or flexible and comprehensive lists of polyisocyanates, polyesters, polyethers, polythioethers, polyacetals, polycarbonates and polyester imides are given as polyurethane precursors, together with lists of suitable catalysts, surfactants, and foam stabilisers. The polyurethane can be blown by volatile organic substances, or substances which liberate gases. Suitable fillers (e.g. BaSO 4 , kieselguhr, carbon black) are mentioned. In Examples, the polyethylene foam layer is placed in a mould and coated with polyurethane reaction mixture, the mould is closed and the mixture allowed to react and foam, then the composite foam is removed. The resultant composite can be used as upholstery material e.g. in motorcar seats, headrests, bumpers or dashboards or furniture, or. when a rigid foam is used, as a heat insulating panel.
