Abstract

1448411 Irradiation with ultra-violet light ELECTRICITY COUNCIL 9 April 1975 [9 April 1974] 15663/74 Heading H5R [Also in Division H1] Ultra-violet light is produced by causing a spark discharge between two electrodes to take place substantially wholly along the surface of a liquid. The discharge can be in air or nitrogen introduced through one of the electrodes. In Fig. 2, the liquid is in the form of a column 26 flowing between the electrodes, one of which has a funnel portion 30 for collecting the liquid. As shown in Fig. 2 the device is used to irradiate another liquid flowing vortically around the discharge and within the device but not in contact with the discharge. In Fig. 1 (not shown) a similar vortical flow of liquid to be irradiated is provided but the spark discharge takes place along the surface of this liquid with which the electrodes are in contact in this case. The flow of irradiated material is controlled in dependence on the spark repetition rate. The device can be used to irradiate external material by the provision of a suitable window.
