Abstract
1448368 Ignition assemblies T I DOMESTIC APPLIANCES Ltd 16 Nov 1973 [17 Nov 1972] 53241/72 Headings F4F and F4T An ignition assembly for a gaseous fuel burner comprises a high voltage generator 1, a pilot gaseous fuel burner 5 comprising a body portion 4 having a flame orifice the body portion, a part thereof, or a part mounted thereon constituting a spark ignition electrode and being connected electrically to the high voltage output 2 of the generator, the assembly further comprising a thermocouple housing 10 a part thereof, being located adjacent the body portion 4, the part thereof or thereon, to form therewith a spark gap. The generator 1 may be a piezo-electric generator. The pilot burner 5 may comprise a metal tube 4 supported via a ceramic insulator on a structure 6, e.g. a main burner or support therefor. In one form, Fig. 1 (not shown), the tube 4 is curved towards a thermocouple housing 10 and a spark is struck between tube 4 and housing 10. Alternatively the tube 4 may be straight and the thermocouple 10 curved towards an integral projection 11, Fig. 2, on tube 4 defining an electrode. In a third form, Fig. 3, the top end of pilot tube 4 is closed by a cap 13 and flame ports are formed in the side wall of the tube 4, one port 15 being directed towards a main burner and another 14 towards thermocouple 10, a spark being struck between thermocouple 10 and a wire electrode 16 on cap 13. The second or third embodiment may be modified by forming the tube 4 partly or wholly of ceramic and connecting the generator output 2 to electrode 11 or 16 directly or via a conductive strip on the pilot burner. The ignition assembly may be controlled by the apparatus disclosed in Application 53239/72.
