1448130 Extrusion sheathing of optical fibres STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 18 Dec 1973 58475/73 Heading B5A [Also in Division G2] A glass optical communication fibre is coated by extrusion, with plastics which may comprise polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene, polytetramethylene terephthalate, or 1-4 cyclohexylene terephthalate / isophthalate copolymer. The extrusion is effected from a die 10 into which the fibre is delivered through a point 11 terminating, upstream of the die outlet, in a parallel sided tubing 12, e.g. a hypodermic needle, secured at a screw threaded portion 13 to facilitate threading of the fibre. The coating may be effected directly upon fibre delivered from a glass fibre drawing apparatus, in which the fibre is drawn from a melt and annealed and cooled before delivery to the head at the fibre drawing speed. Alternatively, the fibre is fed tangentially from a driven or free running spool and through a sizing die to the extrusion die, the coated fibre being drawn from the die through an oven to anneal the plastics, and through a cooling trough to a storage reel. Cooling may be in air and water.
