Abstract

1448053 Multiple battery charging B D KINDER 17 Oct 1974 [8 March 1974] 10438/74 Heading H2H Apparatus for simultaneously charging a main battery and an auxiliary battery, the auxiliary battery being divided into at least two parts comprises means whereby the parts of the auxiliary battery are charged in parallel and discharged in series. A generator 1 of a motor vehicle produces a regulated D.C. output of 14 volts which is directly connected to a main battery 2 of the vehicle and, via an ignition switch 3 and a manually operable change over switch 9<SP>1</SP>, 9<SP>11</SP> to a battery 7 in the form of two 6 volt parts housed in a portable container and usable as an auxiliary battery. During charging the switch 9 is placed so that the two batteries 7 are in parallel to ensure sufficient voltage at the terminals thereof for charging the battery should the voltage drop along the system 11 tend to be considerable. The charging rate of the battery 7 can be varied by operation of switch 16 and a diode 13 prevents discharge of the battery 7 into the battery 2. After charge the battery 7 can be removed from the charging system at a plug and socket device 10 and a load connected thereto, during discharge the batteries 7 being connected in series by changeover of the switch contacts 9<SP>1</SP>, 9<SP>11</SP>. In other embodiments the switch 9 may be an electromagnetic relay and the switch 16 and elements 14, 15, 17 housed in the container with the battery. If desired the elements 14-17 may be replaced by transistors.
