Abstract
1447274 Polymer/isocyanate compositions; polyurethanes and foams IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 3 Jan 1975 [28 Jan 1974] 03828/74 Headings C3C C3P and C3R Dispersions of a polymer of one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers in an isocyanate are prepared by (i) polymerizing said monomer(s) in an inert solvent under otherwise conventional conditions, (ii) adding an isocyanate to the polymerizate/solvent mixture, and (iii) removing the solvent by evaporation or distillation, e.g. in a thin film evaporator. In examples, acrylonitrile and acrylonitrile/styrene polymers are made in chlorobenzene, and acrylonitrile/styrene/methyl methacrylate polymer is made in xylene; and the added isocyanate is selected from mixed tolylene diisocyanates, isophorone diisocyanate, a molten urethane polyisocyanate and a crude mixture of methylene-bridged polyphenylpolyisocyanates. The dispersions prepared above are used in the manufacture of polymeric materials by reaction with compounds containing at least two reactive hydrogen atoms, e.g. foamed polyurethanes are made by carrying out the reaction in the presence of a foaming agent. Examples 3-6 illustrate the preparation of foamed polyurethanes by otherwise conventional means, using water and/or trichlorofluormethane as blowing agents, and optionally a chloroethyl or a bromopropyl phosphate (as fire-retardant).
