Abstract

1447168 Reciprocating cylinder IC engines B S COLLINS 2 April 1974 [18 April 1973] 14620/74 Heading F1 An I.C. engine has a plurality of reciprocating cylinders, the axes of the cylinders being radial or nearly so. The engine comprises a cylindrical casing 10, formed with a number of slots 12 each of which receives a tubular combustion chamber (cylinder) 14 having one closed end. The open end of each chamber passes over a fixed piston 16 provided with sealing rings 18. The closed end of each combustion chamber carries an extension 27 and a bearing member 29 which engages a cam slot 30 formed in an oval rotor 23 which is keyed to drive-shaft 25 for rotation therewith. A pinion 32 also carried by extension 27 meshes with external teeth on rotor 23 to absorb some of the load between the combustion chamber and rotor. Inlet and exhaust valves are actuated by cams on the drive-shaft, through pull rods 36. Each combustion chamber makes a complete four-stroke cycle during one turn of the rotor. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown) the closed ends of the combustion chambers carry bearing members which are received in slots in a rotor which has an orbital motion around the drive-shaft.
