Abstract

1445819 Meat cutting band saw MEGGITT ENG Ltd 1 March 1974 9360/74 Heading A4C [Also in Division B5] A meat cutting band saw comprises an upper pulley 11, a lower pulley 9, an end-less saw band 7 passing over the pulleys, an electric motor (12) in a main housing 1 for driving the lower pulley and hence the saw band, and a friction brake mechanism including a drum 18 mounted on a drive wheel 16 of the lower pulley 9, a flexible steel band 20 with a friction lining 21 and a solenoid 34, to automatically stop the saw band within 1¢ seconds of the interruption of the power supply to the electric motor either intentionally or when an access door 14 to a waste bin 13 is opened whereby a traction spring 30 connecting the pair of arms 26 to a pair of plates 28 rotates the former about a pin 25 in the anti-clockwise direction, and thereby tightens the steel band 20 around the drum 18 to stop the movement of the saw band. On re-energizing the motor and the solenoid, the armature of the latter connected to a pair of arms 26 turns the arms in the clockwise direction thereby slackening the steel band around the drum 18 and releasing the brake. An access door 10a of the housing 10 is interlocked with the access door 14. The downwardly extending portion of the housing 10 that partly encloses the descending portion of the saw band is adjustable with respect to the upper surface of a stationary table portion 2. In operation, the meat is placed on a carriage 3 movable along guides 4 and is pressed against a guide-member 5 which is displaceable transversely to the direction of the movement of the carriage 3.
