Abstract

1444330 Wrapping articles H J LANGEN & SONS Ltd 12 June 1974 [5 July 1973] 26003/74 Heading B8C A method of wrapping a carton blank 42 around an article 30 comprises depositing the article in a tray 10, moving the tray into engagement with the blank and wrapping the blank around the article and tray to form a sleeve, withdrawing the tray from the sleeve and closing the ends of the sleeve. The article is fed by a conveyer 32 onto a suction drum 34 having a gate 36 comprising a pair of rotatable flaps 38. The drum drops the article onto a tray 10 mounted on a support arm 24 for movement transversely of a carrying conveyer. The tray moves against a blank 42 supplied by suction cups 46 from a magazine 44 and pushes it between rails 66 to fold it to U-shape. Side wall flaps 54, 56 are folded by fingers 68 on shafts 70. Hot melt adhesive is applied to the flaps 54 of a pair of adjacent cartons by dispenser heads 72 movable both longitudinally with the cartons and transversely thereof. After withdrawal of the tray rotatable kicker plate 88 closes lower end flaps 58 and end tabs 64, adhesive is applied by applicator 90 and the top end flaps 60 ploughed down. As shown the tray becomes inverted during the folding action but this is optional.
