Abstract

1444328 Aerials RAYTHEON CO 29 May 1974 [11 June 1973] 23844/74 Heading H4A [Also in Division H1] In a phased array antenna system comprising a plurality of antenna elements, apparatus for impedance matching between free space and a ferrite phase shifter disposed within each element and for preventing transmission of modes higher than the dominant mode comprises, a section of waveguide (dimensioned to have a cut-off frequency higher than the highest frequency of the R.F. energy transmitted) and a pair of dielectric media separated by the section of waveguide to act as a pair of inductively coupled resonant circuits the centre frequency of which corresponds to the frequency of the dominant mode and the bandwidth of which corresponds to the band of frequencies to be transmitted, the respective dielectric media providing different propagation time delays. As described, a planar array of phase-changing elements 10, Fig. 1, receives on its rear face radiation from an electromagnetic horn 17. A beam steering computer 15 supplies appropriate control currents to each element, so that the waves from the horn are collimated and are directed as required. Each element 11, Fig. 2, comprises a section of rectangular crosssection waveguide 23 (as shown, the top has been removed) which contains three serially arranged ferrite phase shifters 26a, 26b, 26c and which has impedance matching devices 25, 25<SP>1</SP> at its ends, and driver circuitry 13. The ferrite phase shifters are separated from each other and from the impedance matching element 25 by insulating spacers 30a, 30b, 30c. Control signals from the driver 13 are applied via cables 28a, 28b, 28c. The impedance matching device 25 comprises a circular waveguide structure 27 having disposed therein two spaced apart dielectric material (e.g. bercyllia) slabs 32, 34, which are fastened in place by a suitable epoxy resin. The device 25 is connected to the waveguide 23 by a conductive disc 37, in which is a rectangular slot 41, and which is welded in place. The impedance matching device 25<SP>1</SP> comprises two spaced apart dielectric material slabs 44, 46 between which is an air-filled cavity 48 defined by dielectric material spacers 52, 54.
