1443322 Preventing tarnishing of Ag OXY METAL INDUSTRIES CORP 9 Oct 1973 [9 Oct 1972] 47138/73 Heading C7B Resistance to corrosion, tarnishing and blackening of an article of Ag, Ag alloy or Ag plate is increased by coating it with at least one metallic layer comprising a noble metal selected from Au and the Pt group metals, and causing the said layer to diffuse into the article, such that the appearance of the article after said diffusion is substantially the same as before the coating step. Preferred metals are Au, Pt, Ru and Pd; the noble metal may be used in combination with one or more of Sb, As, Be, Bi, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, In, Fe, Pb, Mn, Mo, Ni, Ta, Sn, Ti, W and Zn; coating to thickness 0À01-10Á may be by electro-phoresis, spraying of a liquid containing metal particles, vacuum deposition, electroless, or preferably, electrolytic plating; diffusion is performed at 100-500‹C in air or an inert atmosphere such as N 2 or Ar, e.g. a Pd layer 0À2-0À4Á thick is heated at 200-300‹C for 5-15 min. Solid Ag may be coated at pH 9À7 and 55‹C at C.D. 0À5 A/dm<SP>2</SP> in a white gold bath containing 4 g/l Au as sulphite, 12 g/l Cd as EDTA salt, 10 mg/l Cu as EDTA salt, 100 g/l NH 4 EDTA and 50 g/l Na 2 SO 3 , or at pH 9À5 at 50‹C and 0À2-0À5 A/dm<SP>2</SP> in a Pd bath containing 10 g/l Pd (as PdCl 2 ) 50 ml/1 NH 4 OH and 100 g/l (NH 4 ) 2 SO 3 .
