Abstract
1442644 Connector TRW Inc 4 Dec 1973 [4 Dec 1972] 56087/73 Heading H2E To facilitate entry of a pair of insulated conductor ends into a crimpable connector, W- shaped plastics film strip liner 8 is inserted inside known oval or ellipitical section toothed spring-metal inner sleeve 2, itself surrounded tightly by soft metal blind outer sleeve 4. Outer wings of strip 8 are trapped by heat-shrunk plastics jacket 6, and held taut by teeth 20. Alternatively a turned back tubular film element may be fitted. Jacket 6 on shrinking constricts 40 below sleeve 4 but forms flared entry (44, Fig. 3, not shown) above the mouth of sleeve 4. On crimping, teeth 20 penetrate both film 8 and wire insulation, biting into conductors to make contact and grip mechanically. To produce connectors automatically (Fig. 7), unshrunk jacket 68 is placed over spatulate pin 62 at first position A of indexing dies 56 on platen 54. Film strip 70 for the liners is held taut over positions B and C; at position C an assembled metal sleeve, i.e. parts 2 and 4, held in a chuck (not shown) is pushed down over pin 62, forming the film into a W. The chuck then releases and is withdrawn. After the die indexes to D, unrolling the film, a plunger (not shown) forces the sleeve fully down and simultaneously an attached knife cuts the left limb of the film, leaving the roll set for the next connector. Finally at E, and at subsequent stations if necessary for timing, the jacket 6 is shrunk in oven 72, the conical pin base 60 forming the flared entry (44).
