Abstract

1442543 Continuous filtration with selective back washing KOPPERS CO Inc 4 April 1974 [23 April 1973] 15099/74 Heading C1C A method of backwashing or replacing adsorbent filter medium in a fixed filter bed of a continuously filtering liquid purifying system comprises: (a) sequentially isolating a selected portion of the filter medium from the remainder of the filter medium; and (b) selectively backwashing laden adsorbent filter medium, or replacing spent adsorbent filter medium in the isolated portion; while filtering of contaminated liquid through the remainder of the filter medium continues. Apparatus is described in some detail for the automatic backwashing or replacement of adsorbent filter medium as above which -comprises isolating means and selection means. The filter medium used may include activated granular carbon or a zeolite.
