Abstract
1442085 Filter VATTENBYGGNADSBYRAN AB 30 Jan 1974 04413/74 Heading B1D A downward flow filter bed for mains water or sewage effluent comprises at least two layers 2, 3 of granular filter media, the grain size decreasing and the grain density increasing downwards from one layer to the next, at least the uppermost layer 3 comprising grains of plastics of uniform size loaded with filler to increase their density and give a rough surface to assist impurity retention. Plastics may be polyethylene, polystyrene, polyamide, polypropylene, epoxy resin or acetal plastics. The filler may be sand, chalk, kaolin, stone dust, coal dust or glass fibre and is uniformly mixed into the plastics. In Fig. 1 layer 2 comprises sand of 2-4 mm grain size, and layer 3 comprises extruded cylinders of glass fibre-reinforced acetal plastics of 4 mm dia. and 5 mm long. Tubes 11, 12 enable the pressure drop across layer 2 to be monitored. In Fig. 3 (not shown) a three layer bed downstream of a flocking stage and settling tank (16, 17) comprises a lower layer of sand (0.8-1.2 mm dia.), a layer of anthracite (1.6-2.5 mm. dia. and 1.9 g/cc) and a top layer of plastics bodies (4 x 5 mm. and made of polyethylene with 35% chalk therein). The beds are cleaned by reverse flow of water or air and water which may fluidise the upper layer(s).
