Abstract
1442066 Cupping REYNOLDS METALS CO 23 April 1974 [3 May 1973] 17757/74 Heading B3Q Aluminium &c. cups are drawn from sheet metal 15 by apparatus having an inner 37 and an outer member 36 for pressing a blank against the end 27 of a die 20, a fluid chamber 70, Fig. 3, being defined between the members 36, 37 which communicates through a restricted passage 74 with a reservoir 72, so that fluid is expelled from the chamber 70 as the outer member engages the end 27 and engagement of the inner member 37 with the end 27 upon withdrawal of the edge of the drawn blank is delayed by return of fluid to the chamber 70 through the restricted passage 74. Thus damaging thinning of the edge of the blank by excessive pressure of the "hold-down" is avoided. As shown, the die 20 moves down over a stationary punch 32 and co-operates with a cutting ring 25 to sever a blank from the sheet 15. The outer holder ring 36 is mounted on an annular piston 71 in a pneumatic or hydraulic cushion 45 formed by the reservoir 72, from which fluid passes to the passage 74 through passages 77, 78, 79. The restricted passage 74 may be provided by a valve, and more than two holding rings may be used.
